What many parents don’t realize is there are still some home remedies that can achieve really effective lice killing results. The head lice vinegar treatment is one of these remedies.

For many years people have been using over the counter lice shampoos and chemically based products as a head lice solution and quite often have not found any significant results.

Vinegar has an acetic concentration of a proximately 5 per cent and it’s this acidity that makes vinegar a great natural choice for removing lice and nits.

The properties within vinegar can dissolve the cement that nits use naturally to stick to your hair and it can also asphyxiate the lice. This is what makes vinegar an extremely effective natural treatment for killing lice.

How Vinegar should be used to properly remove head lice.

You first need to shampoo the infested head and hair with a regular shampoo. There is no need to use a lice shampoo for this.

Next you should rinse the hair and scalp with white vinegar that has been warmed. The warmer it is, the more effective the treatment will be.

To ensure you get rid of all of the lice and nits you should repeat this process seven to ten days after the initial treatment. If you do find any nits that were missed, simply shampoo, rinse through with the warmed white vinegar and carefully comb through the hair again.

The way to make sure you avoid a re-infestation is to wash any clothes or bed linen that may have been in contact with lice on the hottest wash possible. It is not actually the soap and water that kills the lice, it’s the heat! You can also dry your clothes and linen in a dryer on the hottest temperature to make sure you kill them all.

Any hairbrushes or combs that have been used need to be left to soak in boiling water for 5 minutes to destroy any lice or nits hiding on them.

A head lice vinegar treatment is a very effective natural way to remove head lice and nits and it’s a safe alternative to using chemically based lice removal products, some of which have dangerous side effects!

You can prevent a re-infestation by using lavender essential oil. Just place one or two drops on the neck and behind the ears to keep them away. Lice hate the smell of lavender oil and this could serve to be your prevention rather than the cure.

Well that time of year is on us again, the long awaited return to school (for the parents anyway). Unfortunately with the return to school comes the risk of contracting head lice.

One of the ways of keeping head lice under control, is to get to know the head lice life cycle. This way you can take steps to foil their dastardly plans to take over your child’s head, before they even get a chance to lay a single egg.

To understand the head lice life cycle, it is a good idea to know where the whole problem starts.

Studies have shown that head lice are almost certainly only spread through head to head contact alone. With this in mind, there are certain steps you can take to prevent them from happening at all.

Before school, have a quick word with them about sharing hats, combs or hair ties. You can also tie the hair up, so the head lice have a harder time swinging from head to head with those powerful front legs. Girls can wear a scarf over their head, and boys can wear hair gel, to make it harder for the lice to move around and lay their eggs.

Another common misconception is that head lice can be caught from pets or other animals. Head lice are a human parasite, and need human blood to survive. Concentrate on ensuring they don’t catch them from other children, and there is a good chance you may avert the problem before it begins.

Once you have lice however, it is possible to get rid of them by breaking their life cycle.

When a child comes home with a case of lice, a parent’s knee jerk reaction is involuntary and instantaneous. They want them out, and they want them out now. They want to nuke them good, and I don’t blame them.

The problem is, pesticide treatment products are potentially dangerous and can cause serious damage, even if used specifically as directed. Please avoid OTC (over the counter) chemical head lice treatment products at all costs.

Head lice are resistant to most of these chemicals anyway. Our children on the other hand, are not.

At this stage, you will need to find something natural that will kill the lice now, and worry about the eggs second.

In order to control them with a remedy that does not kill eggs (almost all of them), you need to time it so you kill all the live lice before they are capable of laying more eggs.

The first stage of a head louse’s life, is the nit, or egg. This lasts for around 6-7 days before they hatch.

The immature louse is called a nymph, and they stay in that stage, shedding their skin three times over the course of 7-10 days. In this time, they don’t lay eggs.

The life span of an adult louse is around 30 days. In this time, a female louse can lay up to 88 eggs.

So, if you kill all the live lice in the hair, and the first egg hatches immediately afterwards, you have 7-10 days before that louse is capable of laying eggs. So, one week later, use your remedy again, and all hatched nymphs are dead.

If the next louse hatches immediately after that treatment, again, you have seven more days before it starts to lay eggs. So, using your natural remedy, treat and kill all nymphs again in seven days time.

It’s highly unlikely any lice have been able to lay more eggs, or there were any eggs left to hatch, but to completely break the life cycle, treat one more time with your natural remedy, and all should be well for the future.

For this method, treating this many times, I really feel chemicals or any other toxic remedies commonly in use are out of the question. I feel this is the only way to break the head lice life cycle however, if you are unable to kill all the eggs.

You can go back to using prevention methods to ensure they never return.

Probably your child has complained about itchiness in her scalp one summer day and you found out some crawling insects in her scalp. Could it be lice? How can you tell that your child has lice? Do you know something about effective head lice removal? Probably as parents, these are some challenges that you may encounter when you see your children scratching their scalp every now and then.

When eggs hatched, they become adult lice and feed almost five times daily by sucking on small amount of blood in the scalp through their small sharp claws pierced into the scalp.

Removing lice require much effort, patience and determination. You have to remove lice and lice eggs one by one. There are many possible ways in order to remove head lice one of which is using medicated lice shampoo. After taking a bath while the hair is still wet you can divide the whole hair area into one-inch sections and comb form the scalp to the tip of the hair using fine toothed head lice comb. You should wipe out comb first before going to the next section of the hair in order to remove those nits and nymphs thoroughly. Normally, removing head lice with a comb is a tedious effort and so be very patient when you do this. This will take a number of hours to go through the hair thoroughly. Using medicated lice shampoos is not a guarantee at all to remove head lice completely because there might be nits and new hatched eggs from time to time. Re infestation of lice is greatly possible if you are very patient enough to remove the lice and nits from time to time.

Using tweezers is one of the oldest head lice removal method used by many people. This operates as if you are also using your comb when you picked up lice and nits in the scalp. It works the same way by dividing the whole hair area into one-inch sections and you pick them one by one. Again, this method requires much patience during the process of removing head lice and nits. How will you dispose the lice and nits after picking them up? The best way to dispose of these lice and nits is by sticking them unto a wide masking tape, placed in a Ziploc bag and throw them in the trash.

There are also instances in which lice and nits can stick to linens and bedding at home and they need massive cleaning as well. Wash them in hot water, bleach for about twenty minutes, and placed all washed linens in the dryer after. Use vacuum cleaner for upholstered furniture and carpets.

You can do a number of ways to remove lice effectively at home. All you need is a little patience and determination to do the process again and again until all lice eggs are thoroughly removed from the scalp.
