At some stage in your children’s lives, especially when they start school, they will become infected with head lice. It doesn’t matter how much you try to prevent it, they will always somehow manage to become infested with them. However in this article we will look at a number of different head lice home remedies you could try should your child get them.

1. Take 1 teaspoon of lime juice, 1 teaspoon of garlic paste and apply it all over your child’s scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then wash it off.

2. Take 8-10 almonds and grind them into a paste with 2-3 teaspoons of lime juice. Again this needs to be applied to the child’s scalp and left on for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes is up you can then wash the child’s hair as normal.

3. Vinegar is another one of the head lice home remedies that you can try. Just wash the hair and scalp with household vinegar.

4. Massage mayonnaise in to the hair and on the scalp. After 2 hours, comb through the hair gently before washing again.

5. By applying Vaseline directly and freely to your scalp you will be able to suffocate and then remove the lice. However, this may take a long time to do as Vaseline is not easy to remove from hair. Before washing, you could apply some corn flour to the Vaseline while on the head and it will make the process much easier.

6. Mix together 20 drops of eucalyptus essential oil and tea tree oil with 10 drops each of aniseed essential oil and lemon oil along with 75ml of olive oil. Apply to the hair and leave for 1 hour before washing thoroughly.

As you can see, there are a wide variety of head lice home remedies that are available and many of which can be made using products that you probably already have at home. Repeat treatments as often as necessary and don’t give up in finding a head lice home remedy that works for your situation.

Treating head lice can be time consuming as well as costly if you don’t do it correctly. By the time you are wondering if all those itches and scratchings might be lice, your head, or a loved ones head, might be full. To treat head lice, it is always recommended that it is done in conjunction with a steel comb. The steel comb will try and removed the lice from the hair, taking the view that with the lice, the nits can’t be laid. The nits are the eggs of the head lice and therefore by removing its source (the lice) you will be removing the nits as well.

As well as using the steel comb to treat head lice, you will need to use a treatment of either shampoo or even just a home remedy works as well. The important thing to accept is that the comb will remove a large amount of head lice but it won’t remove them all. Any that are remaining on the hair will just lay nits, time and time again, and eventually you will have a head full of head lice again.

Therefore, you will need to treat the head will the shampoo or another remedy.

Until recently, you always treated lice on the head with a special shampoo which was given to you by a pharmacist or doctor. Nowadays, many people use home remedies to help treat the problem. In fact, it is suggested that home remedies are used at the same rate, if not more than, because most of the items required to be used in the home remedy are found in most peoples homes. Plus, you are not using pesticides or chemicals which may cause reactions.

Common home remedies include the use of mayonnaise, Listerine, vinegar and tea tree oil. Not all at the same time though. By following well used and documented recipes and instructions, you can rid your head of ice once and for all by using simple home remedies.

Head Lice Treatment – 5 Tips to Avoid a Winter Infestation

I love winter. Breath white in the air, red noses and smiles as children are shepherded through the frost to school. Ice on puddles, warm scarves and woolen mittens. Chilly evenings spent inside chatting, the cold bringing us closer together. A time for snowmen, hot chocolate, toasting marshmallows on the fire, and… head lice.

Wait a minute, head lice?

Yes, head lice. The thought of which is enough to make even the strongest parent (who has seen it all) shiver to the bone, shift uncomfortably and unconsciously itch their head.

Winter is a time of crowding together to stay warm, sharing hats, coats and mittens, coloring together, huddled on the floor in front of the fire. This is a veritable free for all for head lice, who will only leave one human for another. Leaving for any other reason spells certain death, so as soon as they smell another, they are off in search of fresh blood for them and their nits.

Thankfully there are several ways to avoid the wee nasties launching a full scale invasion on your child this winter.

Sit down and have a chat with your child about the perils of head lice. Let them know that they need to be very careful not to share hats, coats, scarves or anything that can transmit head lice or their eggs. If you have trouble, you can visit our website below and download our totally free eBook that you can read together.

Talk to your girls about sharing hair brushes and combs. Dress ups and hair brushing will be common with inside play being a little more limited. Let them know that it only takes one pregnant or a pair of lice to cause an infestation and all scrunchies, hair ties, brushes and combs are off limits.

Boys are likely to be sitting close together playing games, either the electronic, hand held or board kind. Let them know that head lice find it very easy to reach out with those powerful front legs and swing from child to child. They do not jump or fly, but they are designed very well to transfer themselves through head to head contact. Studies have shown this is very likely the only method of transmission.

Remind children that head lice have nothing to do with a child’s cleanliness. Let them know that head lice actually prefer clean hair, so just because a child has contracted lice, doesn’t mean they are dirty. Try to minimize teasing by making it clear that head lice find it much easier to move around in clean hair and attach their nits, but they will live anywhere, so it has nothing to do with how clean or dirty you are.

Tea Tree oil can be bought from your local health food and has been proven to be a safe method of prevention. It makes the child ‘invisible’ to the lice as they no longer think they are human, so will not transfer to them. There are a variety of ways it can be used.

i). Add 10 drops to your normal shampoo so that it smells strongly of Tea Tree.

ii). Add a few drops to water in a spray bottle and spray before play.

iii). Add a few drops to a leave in conditioner and spray every morning.

iv). For boys, add a few drops to their gel.

v). For girls, add a few drops to their hair spray, as long as it is the pump bottle kind.

With head lice, prevention really is the best cure. They are a lot easier to avoid than they are to get rid of. As long as you take just a few precautions, you can avoid a full scale invasion of head lice this winter.

Happy holidays!

Head Lice Home Remedy – FAQ

If you have ever had the misfortune of having to deal with a head lice infestation, you know how difficult it can be to get rid of them.

Here are some questions that are frequently emailed to us at our head lice review website:

What are the benefits of having your own natural family remedy?

If you have your own remedy, you can make it up at any time. There is no need to leave the house, possibly having to find someone to watch children in search of help, as you already have something on hand.

If you are out visiting, and it comes up they or friends are in need of a remedy, you can share it with them. They will be very grateful to you, because you could potentially save them hundreds of dollars.

There is no need to ever use toxic and potentially harmful chemicals ever again.

Why not just use a chemical pesticide treatment?

Firstly, they are expensive, with head lice product makers bringing in over $100 million dollars per year in the US alone from these products. Treatments for more than one child can run into the hundreds of dollars.

Chemicals have the potential for serious harm, even if used specifically as directed. Lindane, which used to be the most common form of treatment in such preparations as ‘Kwell,’ is now a known carcinogen, and has been banned in 52 countries. How many other chemical treatments are going to be found to be harmful, after the damage has already been done?

They can cause damage to our waterways, with just one drop in millions killing fish and causing algal blooms. California banned Lindane for this very reason.

And what’s more, they are just not working any more. When two lice are not killed and they then go on to breed, they multiply into a new super-breed of lice that are resistant to that chemical. Further treatments are useless, and cause more damage to the host than the lice.

Do I need to comb the nits and lice out?

Having a nit comb on hand is handy for light infestations. It is possible just get rid of a few lice and eggs with a comb, without having to purchase any product at all.

Once you have used a natural remedy to kill both lice and eggs, if you wish to remove the dead eggs, a nit comb is perfect for this. No-one likes to have eggs in their hair after all.

A nit comb is also hand to comb your natural remedy through the hair, to ensure even coverage.

So as you can see, having your own personal remedy is the best idea, so you can make it up over and over. Ask around members of your family, or search online for people who have been there and can help.

This way, you never have to worry about dangerous chemicals ever again.

What are head lice?

Head lice are blood sucking parasites that live by feeding off human heads and scalps. Head lice have specially adapted hooks on their feet to hold onto the hosts head, normally on a single strand of hair. Head lice are tiny creatures which are only 2 – 3 mm in length. Head lice feed by burrowing their mouth into the scalp on a daily basis, or when ever they require nutrients. They have six legs and vary in color from light brown to grey or almost black. Their color makes them very difficult to find and hunt down in dark colored hair.

How many eggs can a mature head lice female lay?
A mature female louse has the ability to lay about six eggs a day on average. This rate of breeding makes getting rid of head lice a challenge. Getting rid of head lice is a challenge as it required constant effort and never ending determination until every last parasite is either killed or removed.

Where do head lice come from?
Head lice have been on the earth since prehistoric times and this is a testament to the creature’s survival. Scientists have determined that lice have probably lived as long as humans. Other scientists have said that lice might have come from monkeys and then evolved to entirely rely on humans.

How do you get head lice?
Head lice are most commonly spread through direct contact. Direct contact could be from using an infected comb, brush or wearing an infected person’s hat. Head lice is also spread throughout an entire household if one person comes home infected and then the family member that helps remove the nits and lice get infected. Direct physical contact can also result in getting head lice, for example putting your head on the head rest of a couch that has been used by an infected person. It is important to know that head lice cannot jump, fly or hop. Head lice mainly moved by crawling although they prefer to hook themselves to a root of hair.

How can I break the Head louse’s life cycle?
Breaking the head louse’s life cycle is the most important part of destroying and eventually getting rid of the infestation. Breaking the life cycle will cause the number of lice to remain steady for a while and this gives you an opportunity to attack. In order to break the life cycle you will first need to understand it. Head lice have a short life span, about thirty days on average. Once the head lice are born, which takes eight to ten days, it will require nine to ten days to mature. After the nine to ten days the louse will be able to lay eggs and increase the population. Head lice grow in three stages which are, nits (or eggs), nymph (larva form), and finally into adults. In the nymph stage louse are the hardest to see because they are basically transparent and extremely small (about the size of a pin head). Adult lice have the ability to crawl and maneuver very quickly with the cover of hair to hide from the light. Head lice are normally diagnosed by finding nits.

I have battled with head lice before and so I decided to help other people with the common problem of head lice. Getting rid of head lice can be a challenge, but with the right knowledge and a safe, tested method of killing head lice you will be able to become head lice free again.

Head Lice and Home Remedies – Do They Really Work?

Good grief!

Surely the note is wrong!

You’re a good parent, what on earth has happened?

The note from the school nurse says that your child has head lice. It sort of makes you want to hide your face with a paper sack. Simply disgusting! How on earth can that have happened to your child?

Well, the issue is this can happen to anyone.

These critters have no qualms about invading the head of the most impeccably clean and well to do child.

Yes, you shampoo and comb and brush your child’s hair every single night but really that doesn’t matter at all.

Infestations can happen to the best of us. But you have already made a decision that you are not interested in using pesticides to kill the head lice. That simply sounds too harsh and something you are not comfortable with.

That is okay.

Home remedies for head lice may be something that you are more comfortable with and if that is so be sure to do the research first before you make a final decision on which home remedy to use.

The first home remedy for head lice that you might consider is simply trying to comb them out with a special nit comb or by using a pet style flea brush.

This will be a long and tedious method.

If you are going to use this style of home treatment get ready to be patient.

Wet your child’s hair and use a conditioner or even olive oil, divide the hair into small sections and then begin by combing from the root of the hair out to the end of the strand.

Look at the comb every time it passes through a section of the hair. You might even consider combing your child’s hair over a bowl of water or over a white paper towel so you can see what you are able to comb out of each strand of hair. This method does take a lot of time and a lot of patience from not only you but from your child as well.

If you have made the decision to use an over-the-counter head lice treatment then make sure that you thoroughly read the warning on the boxes label because there are many side effects associated with these treatments.

Side effects include things such as scalp irritation, head rashes and even eczema. There is even a study which seems to link the chemical treatment of children with head lice to a higher incidence of leukemia.

Again, there are no hard core facts but it is certainly something to take into consideration. It is also important to remember if you are pregnant or nursing you must not use over-the-counter chemical head lice treatments.

One successful home remedy for head lice treatment is a combination of tea tree oil, citronella, lavender oil, and neem oil.

Tea tree oil which comes from the Melaleuca plant in Australia has properties which are known to be both anti-septic and anti-fungal. Tea tree oil is used to fight and insect bites, acne, colds, flu, and even mouth infections. Citronella oil comes from a grass and is very well known and widely used to repel both insects, such as mosquitoes, flies, and ticks.

Lavender oil is used to treat insect bites, fungal infections, sunburn, and even anxiety. It is a known relaxant. Neem oil also found in Australia is used as an insect repellent and also has other therapeutic purposes particularly associated with healing skin diseases.

You may be able to find this combination of natural head lice treatment products at your natural health food store or online.

Home remedies for head lice treatment certainly vary, but there have been many reports of effective natural treatments for head lice.

If you choose not to use pesticide chemicals in order to rid your child of head lice, this decision is totally up to you.

However, you must do something about the head lice, ignoring it is not an option, and a home remedy or more natural approach seems to be a good choice for you.

Head lice infest the head and neck and usually attach their eggs to the base of the hair shaft…

Tea Tree Oil Safe Treatment for Lice

Essential oils are becoming a popular method to deal with childhood head lice. The pesticide treatments commonly used contain toxins that pose serious health threats. Because the scalp has many blood vessels close to the skin, these toxic substances are absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

Pesticide treatments which are commonly used to repel lice contain toxins that pose serious health threats. Because the scalp has many blood vessels close to the skin, these toxic substances are absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

Harmful side effects from chemical lice treatments include nervous system damage, convulsions, seizures, nausea, vomiting, headaches, mental confusion and even death. To make matters worse, these pesticides are becoming less effective as lice are developing a resistance to them. This often leads to repeated treatments. The additional exposure adds to the potential harm.

Head lice are highly contagious and very common among children. Because certain essential oils are highly effective against lice, there is absolutely no reason to expose children to dangerous pesticide treatment.

Laboratory tests (Veal 1996) show the essential oils of aniseed, cinnamon leaf, red thyme, tea tree, peppermint, nutmeg and oregano to be effective in killing live lice and their eggs. Other essential oils used to repel lice include lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, juniper berry, bergamot, clary sage, and lemongrass.

Tea tree oil may be the best choice for several reasons. Tea tree oil was found to be 93% effective against killing adult lice and 83% effective in killing their eggs. It is generally safe and is one of the only essential oils that can be used neat (undiluted) on the skin (in small amounts.) Tea tree oil can be used on children as young as one year old. Tea tree oil is so versatile that it should be on hand in every household. Having it on hand for other uses will prevent having to search for ingredients when dealing with a lice infestation that requires prompt action.

Many of the essential oils listed above should not be used on children. It is important to check safety data before using any essential oil. Oregano oil and red thyme oil should not be used at all. All essential oils, including tea tree should only be used by children on an "as needed" basis, and must be properly diluted.

Essential oils can be used both to rid the scalp of lice when an infestation is present and as a preventative measure when there is a potential threat.

To rid the scalp of lice the essential oils must be diluted in a vegetable oil or alcohol. Vegetable oil may be the best choice for smothering lice and to soothe scalp that may be sore or itchy from infestation.

Olive oil or vodka is fine if you have it on hand. Sweet almond oil, jojoba or grape seed oil are other good choices.

4 TBS (2oz) vegetable oil (or vodka)

1 tsp castor oil (optional)

20 drops tea tree oil

Blend well. Have child sit on a chair in the bathtub. Apply mixture to scalp and hair. Use only the necessary amount to make sure entire scalp and hair is coated. Cover with plastic shower cap. Leave on for several hours. Then wash and condition hair. Comb hair thoroughly with nit comb. Then rinse hair with the following rinse.

FINAL RINSE

1-quart warm water

cup cider vinegar

2-5 drops tea tree oil

Shake well to disperse essential oil. Pour over clean hair. Do not rinse out. When hair dries, saturate a nit comb with tea tree oil and re-comb.

LAUNDRY

Lice can remain alive for up to 72 hours after they have left the human host. Re-infestation can occur if lice remain on pillows, bed linen, combs, clothes and towels. Completely wash all clothing and bedding. One teaspoon of tea tree oil can be added to each wash load. A few drops can be added to a washcloth and placed in the dryer with clothes and bedding. Dry on hottest setting available.

SHAMPOO

During the weeks following lice infestation use the following shampoo formula. Add 2-4 drops of tea tree oil to your normal amount of shampoo for one use. Leave shampoo in for five minutes before rinsing out. Finish with final rinse. Comb with nit comb.

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

To prevent lice from infesting your child’s hair, especially if there is a potential threat, several precautions can be taken. The shampoo and rinse formula described above can be used for precautionary measures. Another quick method to deter potential lice infestation is to dab a few drops of tea tree oil on your fingertips and run your finger through child’s hair.

Warn your child about head to head contact with other children. Advise them not to share hats, helmets, brushes and hair accessories. If they are in day care or elementary school get in a habit of checking their scalp for nits on a regular basis. Early detection will allow quicker relief with fewer side effects such as itching and scabbing.

Tea tree oil is known as a "first aid kit in a bottle". If you keep a bottle on hand for possible lice infections, you will soon discover it’s many other uses and benefits.

The Nasty Side Effects of Pubic Lice

A pubic Lice infestation can become a lot more than just a short annoying interruption in ones sexual activity. If not treated straight away, and with the most appropriate remedy, they can cause long term scaring for the host. Which type of treatment is best for you?

Early Symptoms of STD crabs

Pubic Lice, otherwise known as Crabs, is a Sexually Transmitted Disease, most commonly contracted through sexual activity. Crabs can also attach themselves to the host through contact with infected bed linen and clothing.

Pubic crabs feed on human blood. To maintain their food supply, they attach themselves to the base of the pubic hair shafts and bite or pierce the skin to extract the blood. These bite marks cause the initial symptom of itchiness. If the problem is not diagnosed and treated at this early stage the female lice will rapidly multiply (eggs will hatch within a week) and cause the feeding to increase and the itchiness and irritation to intensify.

Bacterial Infection

Consistent scratching and aggravation will turn the miniature bite marks into small open wounds. Now, pubic lice, like all life forms need to excrete waste, and this is where the infestation gets dangerous. When the excretion from the lice enters the open sores, a bacterial infection is imminent.

A bacterial infection in an already existing rash will accelerate the aggravation and soon become painful to touch. If not treated at this stage, weeping sores and wounds can spread over the entire genital area, and even down the inside of the thighs. Blood and pus spots on underclothes can appear if not contained.

If you use a harsh, chemical based lice treatment cream to treat the parasite at this stage, hosts with sensitive skin types will find the intense pain and burning of the application almost unbearable.

This is an extreme, but very real case, and is what may eventuate if a pubic lice infestation is ignored.

Pubic lice Treatments

There are two main treatment options.

1.Chemical based treatments.

2.Natural remedies.

Chemical Treatments for Pubic lice

Just about all pubic lice remedies on the shelves today are extremely toxic in nature. The problem with chemical treatments is that the human skin was not created to deal with this sort of toxicity.
Our skin is basically a huge sponge which absorbs everything that we apply to it. Toxic chemicals and insecticides such as Permethrin or Benzene Hexachloride strip the hair follicles of their natural oils causing a drying out or scalding of the skin. Repeated exposure to these poisons (or doses) causes rawness in the affected area, extreme irritation and eventual hair thinning and loss.
On top of all this, the head lice parasite has built up a degree of immunity to such chemicals, which are rendering them less effective and in need of more strength, which in turn causes the customer more harm.

Natural Remedies for Pubic lice

A good natural treatment is a far superior solution and just as easy to find. It is also much better for you and your skin. The correct blend of essential oils will not only kill the pubic lice parasite, (even more effectively), they will not burn, dry out or harm your sensitive skin in any way. In fact natural oils will soothe and heal the rash left from scratching, they will stop the itching almost instantly and they are completely safe. Cost wise, natural essential oils are comparative to traditional chemical treatments.

In my opinion natural remedies for pubic lice are a better all round treatment Better, faster, safer, less painful, and cheaper than chemical treatments, and on top of that they will heal the tell tale signs of the infestation.

And best of all you don’t have to go and see the family doctor with your problem to get the prescription, and present it to the pharmacist. Natural oils that you can mix yourself provide far more discretion….you won’t be left with a bottle marked "Pubic Lice Treatment" Apply twice daily…..etc etc …….WITH YOUR NAME ON IT!!!

Conclusion

Pubic Lice are the smaller cousin to head lice, and are talked about nowhere near as much. However they have the potential to do much more damage because the skin is a lot more sensitive in that area.

If you have pubic lice or know anyone who has, please deal with it as soon as possible, only then can usual activity continue as normal. I suggest using a natural oil recipe that you can apply immediately. More information on recommended products is available at my website below. Good Luck!

The Life of Head Lice

Living on the shaft of the human hair found on the head, head lice can not survive anywhere else.

Head lice are only able to live up to 48 hours if they are taken away from the hair on the human head. This irritating and aggravating louse is strong and hearty.

It’s tough to beat when living among the hairs of the head, but if you take it away from that source it makes it vulnerable.

Head lice start out white in color and are no bigger than the head on a pin. This egg takes anywhere from seven to nine days to hatch.

Once the egg hatches it is called a nymph. Then the nymph changes to a brown red color once it has eaten its first meal. Now that’s disgusting!

Feeding on your blood, and growing and growing, the nymphs spend the first twelve days of life shedding its exoskeleton on three different occasions. The exoskeleton must be shed because of the expansive growth the nymph is experiencing.

Once twelve days have passed the young nymph becomes an adult, finds out its sex (sounds exciting!) and can then be officially called a head louse. Once this happens, new adult head lice can start to further infest your head by laying and fertilizing more eggs depending on their sex.

The female spends most of her days feeding, laying eggs, and spreading saliva all over the eggs in order to glue them firmly in place on the hair shaft.

On a good day the female louse may lay six to seven eggs and on a slow day perhaps only three or four. In her short little life span, of approximately 30 days, the female louse can lay a couple of hundred eggs.

But once mama has died off, believe me, all the little girl louse keep up the magic of feeding on your head, laying eggs, spreading saliva and then dying off, leaving more babies behind. And so the cycle continues.

Because of the habitat in which head lice resigned, they endure pathetic conditions and so it is rather amazing how they manage to live without getting mashed while you sleep or how they manage to keep from being washed down the drain during a shampoo.

So hats off to the head lice!

Yes, these little critters are definitely unwanted and most certainly uninvited, but you’ve got to give them credit for fighting so hard to live.

Natural Head Lice Treatment is the Key to Getting Rid of Nits

Their children coming home from school scratching their heads and itching is probably many parents nightmare. Their first thought is probably how to get rid of nits – head lice and nits are one of the most common health problems children can have.

It is not possible for head lice to jump from head to head, however they can easily crawl through hair and be transmitted in this manner- which is why they are so easily spread amongst young children who tend to sit with their heads close together. If your child does get infected with head lice then you will need to get rid of the nits. It is wise to wash all bedding and clean furniture where their heads may have rested, it is unlikely that head lice will live for long in bedding as they need a supply of blood to feed – however it is wise to take every precaution to make sure you get rid of nits effectively. Healthy head lice tend to stay on heads rather than move about onto clothes, however sharing combs or brushes where the lice may have been removed during combing will spread them.

The life cycle of lice is about a month. The lice eggs or nits are attached to the hair close to the scalp and are very hard to remove. They hatch in 7 to 10 days and reach adulthood in another 6 to 10 days. They then live for another 20 days laying about 10 eggs a day.

Head lice can be problematic to get rid of and to prevent the infection recurring unless you follow the correct procedure.Vigilance is needed to ensure that no eggs remain to hatch. Not everyone actually gets an itchy head so if someone in the family is infected all heads should be checked and ideally treated with a natural and non toxic solution.

Unfortunately head lice are becoming immune to chemical treatment and many parents prefer not to use it anyway but there is an alternative to get rid of nits – a safe and non-toxic natural formula of oils and extracts works in two ways.

First, the natural essential oil based formula kills head lice buy restricting their breathing holes. Secondly the natural non toxic oils dissolves the glue that the nits use to attach themselves to the hair shafts so they fall off naturally, or if you prefer they can be got rid of by combing out of the hair, either while it is still wet from treatment or when it is dry. And it’s easy to prevent re-infestations taking hold, regular treatments to get rid of nits will help deter lice from returning and because it is mild and natural formula you can use it as often as you like.
