Head Lice Removal Tips

My son brought head lice home from school and pretty soon we all had a share of the horrors. Now I admit they do send a shiver up your spine thinking about them scuttling around in your hair and it is kind of embarrassing. It makes a person feel grubby knowing they are there and you really want rid of them right away.

You can search around and there is no where as convenient as the internet to find information and solutions to problems. However, that in itself throws up a further problem. Which advice is right and what works? To a degree trial and error is most likely the only true way to find out for sure.

Home Remedy For Head Lice…

Experience is another way to find the answer to your questions. Someone, somewhere who has already been through a situation and can relate their own knowledge of it. In this case having dealt with several separate cases of lice over a number of years I have successfully eradicated them and this is how.

Once you have discovered head lice either from a school letter, seen a child scratching their scalp or spotted them, it is search and destroy time. You will need to carefully and methodically comb through all the hair a small section at a time using a proper nit comb. Ordinary combs and brushes are of no use as the lice are tiny, the size of a sesame seed. The eggs, called nits, are smaller still at about the size of poppy seeds and these are cemented by the adult to hairs near to the scalp.

Proper lice combs are specially designed with finely spaced tines or teeth to trap and drag the parasites from the hair. This isn’t an easy job as the creatures are endowed with powerful claws which they employ to very firmly grasp hairs literally clinging on for grim life. It is possible to buy plastic combs but the metal ones are stronger and easier to disinfect in boiling water.

A second form of comb is the electronic type, a variety of which is the Robi-comb. This battery operated form emits a high pitched tone when it encounters a louse so you can detect they are present. The added advantage of this type of comb is that it sends a tiny electrical charge to zap and kill the lice as it finds them.

By carefully and methodically checking the entire head of hair it is possible to eradicate most of the creatures. The louse is surprisingly quick to scuttle around and for that reason it is possible to miss zapping or combing out every single one. The next step is the way to deal with any stragglers.

Head Lice Remedy…

With the best intentions people may advise old wives solutions of smearing vinegar or Mayonnaise or baby oil onto the scalp. I have tried one or two of these methods I can honestly report they do not kill all the lice, are very messy and are difficult to wash out of the hair and clothes.

That leaves one tried and tested solutions and this is specially manufactured lice killing shampoos. They are designed to do the job, they are safe and they work. As much as I champion alternative and natural treatments where ever possible, a proper over the counter shampoo is the only solution I would use because it works.

Sadly, even though you may eradicate an infestation they can and will return because people, particularly children and constantly in close touch and this is how head lice spread. However a weekly hair inspection is ideal to allow you to keep on top of the situation should they call again.
