The first time most of you can realize that someone in your family is infested with lice is when you see them scratching their heads. Identifying head lice is very important in your efforts to work towards a solution. The trick to treating head lice lies in identifying them as early as possible. Although having lice is not so pleasant, many people experience them at some point of time in their lives. Knowing about head lice, their breed, the way in which they move would help understand the presence of lice easily.
Head lice can primarily be identified by physical examination. You can try focusing a beam of light on the head because the louse would hurry to hide and so you can spot their movement very easily. Although this method can be very useful in identifying head lice, a much easier method is to totally wet the hair and comb through it using a lice comb. While the former helps in precise identification of the eggs and nits, the latter can be used to scan the presence of head lice.
Itching may occur due to a variety of reasons including dry skin problems. Lice should be suspected if there is severe itching on the scalp and back of the neck or if there is a known lice infestation in the community. Although dandruff, dirt, oil or some hairsprays might resemble nits, they can be easily removed from the hair. On close inspection, you should be able to find active lice and many red scars resulting from irritating aroused due to their saliva/bite. This will help you in identifying head lice.

Over the counter medicines may be suggested to remove lice and their eggs. Many commercial products are now found on the Internet and several of them have side effects. After identifying head lice, you should resort to natural ways to remove them so that you don’t damage hair and scalp. Further, natural solutions have no side effects and they don’t result in hair loss.
