The Best Head Lice Comb
The Head Lice Comb – How to Pick the Best
How to get rid of lice has never been easy, and it seems to be getting even more complex. It is not that long ago that we thought we could throw away our head lice combs or nit combs in favor of the new lice treatment products. It now looks as though that may not be the case.
Is It Now Time To Dig Out That Lice Comb?
Some synthetic lice treatment products have been found not only to contain potentially harmful toxins but are now only around 30% effective, as head lice have built up a resistance to them. As if that isn’t bad enough news they often only remove lice – leaving behind their live eggs that hatch leading to re-infestation.
Could The Good Old Head Lice Comb Still Be The Answer?
Using head lice combs is the oldest and safest method to get rid of lice; a method that dates back to the Ancient Egyptians. Even if you use a synthetic lice treatment product or lice shampoo, you still need to use a head lice comb as it is the only way to remove the eggs, or nits as they are more commonly known, from the hair. Yet to be effective the head lice comb must be used very thoroughly which takes time and patience. This is because the eggs are "glued" to the hair shaft, making it difficult to get rid of lice.
Selecting the best head lice comb is now more complex and confusing due to the increased choices of nit comb that are now available in the marketplace.
So lets get down to the nitty gritty of comparing the choice of nit combs currently available and take a look at which is the best head lice comb.
First of all, it is important to know what you are looking for when using head lice combs. These pictures of head lice show quite clearly what you need to look out for.
Removal of the lice egg, or nit as it is commonly known, is the most important aspect of head lice control and using a proper lice comb is the key to this. Again, these pictures of head lice eggs should give you a good idea of what you should be looking for when carrying out your checks.
Metal head lice combs are now becoming more popular as their stiff teeth and narrow slots will effectively crush and remove nits. However, they can be very time consuming to use, which is not good when children are involved!
The latest advance in this area is the Nitty Gritty Comb. This variation of the metal comb has MicroSpiral grooves which are said to trap any nits or lice between two grooved steel teeth. Even so diligence and thoroughness is still key even when using this type.
When using any type of nit comb missing only a few tiny lice will be enough to start the infestation all over again. For this reason it may be useful to use an electronic comb such as the Robi Comb to check if there are any live lice that have been missed.
The way in which the Robi lice comb works is that when it is turned on it emits a soft, high pitched hum. When the teeth trap live lice the humming stops, indicating that live lice are still present. The Robi lice comb can get rid of lice by electrocuting them. However, on the down side the Robi Comb will not detect eggs and so can’t be used to completely get rid of head lice.
So whilst using lice combs is most definitely the best solution to eradicating nits, it is also the most laborious and unless great care and patience is exercised eggs are likely to be missed and re-infestation occur.
A really good technique is to combine a non-toxic, natural formula lice treatment product such as Nit-Nurse which will enable you to enhance the performance of the lice combs, whilst still avoiding the use of harmful toxins. Nit-Nurse is specially formulated to break down the glue that binds lice eggs/nits to the hair shaft, thus helping to detach the nits and greatly reducing the time it takes to remove the nits using the lice combs, ensuring you don’t miss any eggs which may hatch and result in re-infestation.
