What Does Head Lice Look Like? 3 Tips on How You Can Identify Head …
Being able to identify head lice and what they look like is important so you do not mistake this condition with dandruff or something else. In fact, a recent study suggests that there are well over 10 million new cases a year of lice incidents just in the United States alone so dealing with it is important. The following are 3 effective tips when it comes to the question of "What does head lice look like?"
1. Look for common symptoms
Perhaps the most common symptom associated with this condition is the constant irritation and scratching on the top of your head. In addition, you may also find red bumps along your scalp and also behind your neck which can be very irritating if left alone. If you start to notice these symptoms, then it’s important that you take immediate action.
2. Look for live lice
Lice are often times as small as a sesame seed so they can be seen by the naked eye just by using a mirror to check your reflection. These bugs need a host to survive and they do this by injecting saliva into your head so they can feed on your blood. The adult bugs are often brown in color but they can also be white and typically live for up to 30 days.
3. Look for nits
The eggs these critters lay are commonly referred to as nits which are very tiny small balls that are white and can be found literally wrapped around the shaft of your hair. Depending on the severity, numbers can range from a few hundred to literally thousands so treating it right away is crucial. To remove these, you will need a fine metal tooth comb that is specifically designed to get rid of nits.
If you suspect that you have head lice, then be sure to look for these above factors and to take immediate action. Start by using lice medication in your hair for several hours and then use a fine tooth comb to remove the nits while also thoroughly washing your hair with clean water.
